Food Irradiation Highlights:

  • Organized the Food Irradiation Coalition in 1998 and facilitated this group during the development of a petition [FAP 9M4697] to seek food additive approval for a wide variety of ready-to-eat (R-T-E) processed meats, poultry, vegetables, bakery and juice products.
  • Filed the R-T-E petition in 2000 and received approvals for iceberg lettuce and spinach in 2008.
  • Worked with FDA regulators as the lead contact for the Food Irradiation Coalition’s petition to resolve both scientific questions (such as furan) and scope issues.

  • Developed and co-delivered an “Understanding the Basics of Food Irradiation” course.
  • Continuing to provide numerous lectures and deliver invited presentations on food irradiation.
  • Currently meeting with FDA to discuss additional approvals, issues related to food-contact packaging and initiatives for revising FDA’s irradiation labeling policies.
